  5. Emperor Franz Joseph. From an early age he
  6. showed progressive views which brought him
  7. into conflict with his father. He conceived
  8. and helped to write a history of the
  9. Austro-Hungarian empire. In 1889 he and his
  10. mistress, Baroness Marie Vetsera, were found
  11. shot in his hunting lodge at Mayerling, near
  12. Vienna. The official verdict was suicide,
  13. although there were rumours that it was
  14. perpetrated by Jesuits, Hungarian nobles, or
  15. the baroness's husband. In 1881, he married
  16. Princess Stephanie of Belgium, and they had
  17. one daughter, Elizabeth.
